On 21st May 2010 King's Community Church hosted 'An Evening with Nigel Benn'...
Over 130 people from Lancaster, Morecambe and the surrounding area gathered together to share a hotpot supper and to hear an inspiring story as Nigel and his wife Caroline were interviewed by Steve Legg.
Nigel was one of the best known boxers of his time, holding two World titles and winning 42 of his 48 fights. As he described his rise to fame he also reflected on the problems that came with it including drugs and broken relationships. Through the highs and lows of his career, his wife Caroline stood by him with their children, despite cycles of negative behaviour and media attention. Amidst the turmoil she cried out to God, asking Him to show Himself to her if He was real. And God responded to her cry. Caroline shared a powerful testimony of how Jesus met her in her pain and broke into her life, teaching her about love and forgiveness. He revealed to her that just as He forgave her for her sins, so she could forgive Nigel for his. Through the love of Christ, Caroline was able to stand by Nigel and find her marriage transformed. Some time later, Nigel also met with Christ and was able to break free from the addictive cycles he has been involved in. Nigel emphasised that the celebrity lifestyle of fame and drugs is not real, it is meaningless and empty compared to the true life and full life that is found in Christ. Today, Nigel and Caroline are members of a church in Mallorca where the family now lives.
Nigel and Caroline's testimony spoke powerfully to those present, to those who are Christians and to those searching. Theirs is a testimony of grace and forgiveness, of life and love transformed. It is a testimony available to all seeking to know Christ.
